GoCar is Ireland's largest car-sharing service. Founded in Cork in 2008 and now operating across Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and a growing list of regional cities, GoCar has more than 950 vehicles parked in dedicated bays across the country. Members book a car through the GoCar app, walk to the nearest available vehicle, unlock it with their phone, and drive. There's no rental desk, no queue, no paperwork, and no staff trying to upsell you on insurance you don't need.
The model is fundamentally different from traditional car hire companies like Hertz, Enterprise or Europcar. Where a traditional rental gives you a car for a minimum of 24 hours and requires a trip to an airport or city desk, GoCar gives you a car for as little as one hour and lets you collect it from a residential street near your accommodation. Insurance and fuel are bundled into the price. The keys are inside the car. The car is exactly where the app says it is.
For visitors to Ireland, this matters. If you're staying in central Dublin and only want a car for one or two day trips — out to Glendalough, up to the Boyne Valley, around Howth — GoCar is dramatically more convenient and often cheaper than collecting a traditional rental from Dublin Airport. For longer road trips covering multiple regions, a traditional rental is usually still the better choice. The two services are complementary, not competing.

Cars Parked Where You Need Them
Hundreds of GoCars sit in dedicated bays across Dublin — Smithfield, Rathmines, Ranelagh, Drumcondra, Stoneybatter, the IFSC, the lot — and smaller fleets in Cork city, Galway and Limerick. Open the app, see the closest one, walk to it.
Pay by the Hour
Book for an hour to do the IKEA run. Book for a day to drive to Glendalough. Book for a long weekend to head west. There's no minimum, no maximum, and you only pay for the time you actually have it.
Insurance Already Sorted
Every trip comes with third party, fire and theft cover. The standard excess is €2,000, which is fine for most short trips. Drop it to €250 by adding the optional Damage Excess Waiver at booking — worth it on a long drive, overkill on a quick errand.
Fuel on the House (Mostly)
Every booking includes 50 km of fuel. Drive further than that and it's €0.25 per kilometre after that. The fuel card is in the glovebox — use it at any Circle K. You don't pay at the pump, you don't keep the receipt, you just fill up and go.

GoCar groups its vehicles into tiers based on size and use case. The exact models change as the fleet is refreshed, but here's what to expect in each category:

Most GoCar vehicles are manual transmission. Automatic versions are available on some models for an extra €1/hour or €5/day, and the GoSeven Auto and electric tiers are automatic as standard — book ahead if you need one. GoCar also applies a temporary €2 fuel surcharge to every booking.
