Medieval Kilkenny

Kilkenny

About This Route

Kilkenny is Ireland's best-preserved medieval city - a living museum of Norman castles, Gothic churches, and narrow lanes. This compact route explores the city and its surroundings, where 800 years of history remain visible.

Why This Route?

Kilkenny preserves its medieval character:

  • Kilkenny Castle - Norman fortress dominating the city
  • Medieval Mile - Cobbled streets connecting castle to cathedral
  • Black Abbey - Gothic Dominican church
  • St Canice's Cathedral - With Ireland's finest round tower
  • Craft tradition - Kilkenny Design Centre heritage

The City

Kilkenny received its charter in 1609, but the city's importance dates from the Norman conquest. The Butlers, Earls and Dukes of Ormonde, made it their seat, and the Irish Parliament met here in the 1640s.

The Route

Kilkenny City

Allow a full day for the city itself:

Kilkenny Castle

The Butler family seat from 1391 to 1935. The Victorian wing is magnificently restored:

  • Long Gallery with portrait collection
  • Beautifully planted grounds
  • Craft shops in former stables (Kilkenny Design Centre)

The Medieval Mile

Walk from the castle to St Canice's:

  • Rothe House - Tudor merchant's house museum
  • Shee Alms House - 16th-century hospital
  • Butter Slip - Narrow medieval lane
  • Smithwick's Experience - Brewery tour in abbey ruins

St Canice's Cathedral

The second-longest medieval cathedral in Ireland with:

  • Fine Gothic interior
  • Medieval tombs

Black Abbey

Dominican priory founded in 1225, still an active church. The rosary window is exceptional.

Surrounding Area

Kells Priory

8km south - the most extensive medieval monastic ruin in Ireland. The walls enclose 5 acres with multiple towers. Free access, minimal facilities - wonderfully atmospheric.

Jerpoint Abbey

A Cistercian masterpiece with:

  • Carved cloister columns (unique faces and figures)
  • Impressive church remains
  • Interpretive visitor centre

Dunmore Cave

A show cave with spectacular calcite formations. Vikings massacred refuge-seekers here in 928 AD - a dark history.
