1798 Rebellion Trail
Wexford
About This Route
The 1798 Rebellion was Ireland's bloodiest uprising, and Wexford was its heartland. This route traces the rebellion's key sites from the first shots to the final defeat, through a landscape that still remembers.
Historical Context
The United Irishmen, inspired by the American and French revolutions, sought Irish independence. The Wexford rising began on 26 May 1798 and initially succeeded, with rebels holding much of the county. British reinforcements eventually crushed the rising at Vinegar Hill on 21 June, but the memory inspired generations of Irish nationalists.
Your Journey
1. Wexford Town
Start your day in the historic county town. The Bull Ring hosts a striking memorial to the pikemen who fought in the rebellion. The town changed hands multiple times during the conflict. Grab a hearty Irish breakfast before heading north.
2. Oulart Hill
The rebellion's first major victory occurred here on 27 May 1798, when rebels ambushed government militia. Today you'll find a memorial, interpretive panels, and sweeping views across the battlefield. A quiet, reflective site.
3. Enniscorthy & Vinegar Hill
The rebellion's headquarters and its most iconic site. Climb Vinegar Hill to the windmill memorial where rebels made their last stand on 21 June. The views across the River Slaney are stunning, and battlefield interpretation panels bring the history to life.
4. 1798 Visitor Centre
Essential context for understanding everything you've seen. This excellent museum in Enniscorthy tells the complete rebellion story through immersive displays and artifacts. Allow plenty of time here.
5. Ferns
A brief but worthwhile stop at the ancient capital of Leinster. Explore the atmospheric cathedral ruins, medieval high cross, and Norman castle.
6. Bunclody
Gateway to the Blackstairs Mountains and site of a rebel camp during the rising. A good spot to stop for lunch at one of the local pubs before the afternoon leg.
7. New Ross
The bloodiest battle of the rebellion took place here on 5 June. Street fighting lasted all day with heavy casualties on both sides. Visit the memorial garden, then take a coffee break at a local café.
8. Scullabogue
A sensitive memorial marks where over 100 loyalist prisoners died during the rebellion. Approach this site respectfully.
9. JFK Dunganstown
End your journey at the Kennedy ancestral homestead. While not rebellion-related, this site is often combined with the trail and offers a pleasant conclusion to the day.
