Marble Arch & Cuilcagh

Fermanagh

About This Route

This dramatic route explores the UNESCO Global Geopark straddling the Fermanagh-Cavan border. Underground rivers, show caves, rare limestone pavement, and the famous "Stairway to Heaven" boardwalk make this a genuine adventure for all ages.

Why This Route?

The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark is unique:

  • Underground wonders - Ireland's longest show cave
  • The Stairway to Heaven - Instagram-famous boardwalk
  • Rare landscapes - Limestone pavement like the Burren
  • Cross-border experience - Seamlessly crosses into Cavan
  • Family adventure - Exciting for all ages

The Geology

This landscape was formed by water dissolving limestone over millions of years:

  • Caves - Carved by underground rivers
  • Limestone pavement - Exposed rock with deep fissures (grikes)
  • Sinking rivers - Streams that disappear underground
  • Calcite formations - Stalactites and flowstone in the caves

The Route

Starting from Enniskillen

Head south through Florencecourt, passing the beautiful National Trust estate.

Marble Arch Caves

The centrepiece of the route - a spectacular show cave experience:

  • Boat ride - Underground river takes you into the cave system
  • Walking tour - Past stunning formations over 300 million years old
  • Exhibition - Explaining the geopark's geology and history
  • Nature reserve - Woodland walks around the entrance

Tours run hourly and last about 75 minutes. Booking is highly recommended.

Cladagh Glen

A short walk through ancient woodland to the natural Marble Arch - where the underground river emerges into daylight. The arch itself is a dramatic rock formation.

Cuilcagh Boardwalk (Stairway to Heaven)

The route continues across the border into Cavan to reach one of Ireland's most popular hiking destinations. The 7.5km boardwalk trail climbs through blanket bog to the summit of Cuilcagh Mountain (665m).

Trail Details:

  • Distance: 7.5km each way (15km return)
  • Time: 4-5 hours return
  • Difficulty: Moderate (the boardwalk is stepped)
  • Highlights: Endless bog views, summit cairn, escarpment edge

Important: The Stairway has become very popular - arrive early (before 9am) to guarantee parking.

Legnabrocky Trail

A shorter alternative if the main boardwalk is too busy - this loop offers similar bog scenery without the crowds.

Blacklion

A small border village with traditional pubs - good for lunch or refreshments after your hike.

Shannon Pot

Just south in Cavan, this pool is the official source of the River Shannon, Ireland's longest river. An easy short walk from the road.

Adventure Options

Caving

For the more adventurous, several operators offer wild caving experiences in the system beyond the show cave.

Geopark Guided Walks

Rangers lead interpretive walks explaining the unique geology.

Cycling

The quiet roads around the geopark are excellent for cycling.
