Loughcrew & Hidden Meath

Meath

About This Route

Beyond the famous Boyne Valley sites lies another Meath - a landscape of forgotten hilltop tombs, working farms, and quiet country roads. The Loughcrew passage tombs rival Newgrange in age but receive a fraction of the visitors.

Why This Route?

Hidden Meath offers:

  • Loughcrew Cairns - 5,000-year-old tombs you can enter alone
  • Equinox alignment - Light enters the tomb at spring and autumn
  • Authentic countryside - Working farms, small villages
  • Fewer tourists - Often have the tombs to yourself
  • Adventure feel - Hillwalking to reach the cairns

Loughcrew (Sliabh na Callaigh)

The "Hills of the Witch" host around 30 passage tombs built approximately 5,500 years ago - contemporary with Newgrange. The main tomb, Cairn T, is aligned to the equinox sunrise.

Getting There

Unlike Newgrange, you access Loughcrew independently:

  • Drive to the car park
  • Walk uphill to the cairns (20-30 minutes)
  • Collect the key to Cairn T from the coffee shop (refundable deposit)

Cairn T (The Main Tomb)

Inside this corbelled chamber, you'll find:

  • Elaborate megalithic art
  • The "Hag's Chair" - A decorated stone seat outside
  • At equinox, sunlight illuminates the back stone

Other Cairns

Multiple tombs dot the hilltops. Some are ruined, others intact. Explore at your own pace.
