Why This Route?

- Dramatic coast - Beaches backed by towering cliffs
- Mussenden Temple - Ireland's most photographed building
- Benone Beach - 7 miles of golden sand
- Quick but rewarding - Ideal for time-limited visitors
The Route
Derry/Londonderry
Begin by exploring this remarkable city:
The Walls
Walk the 17th-century walls - 1.5km of intact fortification encircling the old city. The four original gates and numerous cannons remain.
The Bogside
The famous murals tell the story of the Troubles and the Civil Rights movement. The People's Gallery murals are powerful public art.
Peace Bridge
The graceful footbridge across the River Foyle symbolises the city's journey from conflict to peace.
Guildhall
A neo-Gothic masterpiece with free exhibition spaces and stunning stained glass.
Eglinton & the Foyle Valley
Head north through this commuter village and along the Foyle estuary. Birdwatchers should watch for waders on the mudflats.
Magilligan Point
A dramatic sandspit extending into Lough Foyle. The Martello tower guards the narrow entrance to the lough. On clear days, Donegal's Inishowen Peninsula is just across the water.
Benone Beach
Seven miles of Blue Flag beach - one of Ireland's finest. The beach is backed by the dramatic cliffs of the Binevenagh plateau. Even on busy days, you can find space here.
Downhill Demesne
The ruined estate of the eccentric Bishop of Derry (Frederick Hervey, Earl of Bristol). The grounds include:
Mussenden Temple
The iconic circular library perched impossibly on the cliff edge, 120 feet above the sea. Built in 1785, it's based on the Temple of Vesta in Rome.
Downhill House
The roofless ruins of the bishop's grand residence - atmospheric rather than restored.
The Black Glen
A scenic walking trail through the estate.
Castlerock
A charming Victorian village where the railway runs between the beach and the cliffs. The dramatic cliff-top walk to the Barmouth viewpoint is highly recommended.
Detour: Binevenagh
For those with more time, the drive up to Binevenagh plateau (385m) offers some of Northern Ireland's most dramatic viewpoints. The sheer cliffs were a Game of Thrones filming location.
